Several of Apple’s standard system components are on their path to receiving significant AI-related enhancements, with Siri, Safari, and Spotlight Search being the first ones to get the upgrade.
In the past few months, there’s been a lot of chatter about AI-related features coming to iOS 18, and AppleInsider has gained information regarding some specifics on the functionality of Apple LLM dubbed Ajax, as well as information on features the company has in the works.
Apart from the specific features, some have collectively shared some info on Apple’s internal AI test environments as well. Before exploring the planned AI features, it is imperative to consider the motivation behind the company’s move to create its gen AI tech and what it wants to achieve by developing it.
As generative AI continues to increase, it only makes sense for Apple to use LLMs to amplify its existing default apps, which are widely deployed across billions of devices across the globe. Those close to the matter suggest the company maintains a clear vision for its AI-enhanced apps and services.

Apple Wants To Use Gen AI To Benefit End Users
Apple’s aim to leverage gen AI will focus on benefiting the end users while trying to keep their privacy by using on-device LLM. Instead of offering a short-term entertainment value in the form of an AI chatbot, the company wants to better its existing portfolio of system apps through gen AI.
Features such as document analysis, text summarization, and AI-enhanced search options would all directly benefit end-users. Apple wants to introduce AI-related upgrades to several of its built-in system apps starting next month, including Siri, Messages, Safari, and Spotlight Search.
Speaking of the next Safari version, Apple is testing AI-related upgrades for the internet browser, with text summarization being one of the biggest features in store. With the launch of Safari 18, Apple is said to introduce article summarization through a new Intelligent Search tool, which means users will get the option to get a summary of any webpage that they are viewing.

Apple’s AI To Power Siri Smart Assistant
Apple’s smart assistant Siri is also due for an upgrade for a long time, and as per people close to the matter, the company plans to integrate the digital assistant more closely with its built-in Messages application.
Apple’s AI software is capable of analyzing message contents in pre-release versions of Apple’s next-gen OS. The LLM is also said to be capable of generating responses that relay the content of messages more simply.
Internal test environments provide significant insight into the overall capabilities of Ajax, especially for the on-device response generation, another key feature the company has in the works.
