It’s been four years since Corning launched its 7th generation Gorilla Glass, which came with a new moniker -- Gorilla Glass Victus. It is aimed at more premium devices, though we’ve seen some mid-rangers using it too. The company is now bringing out a new glass for “value and intermediate devices,” as the company describes it.
In simpler words, Gorilla Glass 7i is aimed at mid-rangers and more affordable phones. But why has the company launched “7i” when there is no version dubbed “7”? GSMArena reached out to the company asking about the 7th generation glass (like Victus) and the company wanted to reflect that. Speaking about the “i,” it’s for “industry-leading innovation for intermediate devices.”

What’s Different With Gorilla Glass 7i?
\Corning claims the Gorilla Glass 7i is capable of surviving drops from up to 1m (3.3ft) onto rough surfaces such as asphalt, while comparable glass alternatives can only go half as high before shattering.
Besides, 7i is said to be two times more scratch-resistant than its rivals in the same category. The 7i formulations were designed to be suitable for a wide range of devices that come at different price points. It also has a focus on sustainability too, since these will be available in the mass market.
Why did the company launch the 7i in the first place? This year has seen plenty of new devices that are still using Gorilla Glass 5 -- popular models such as the Nothing Phone (2a) and Poco F6 Pro, for instance. Gorilla Glass 6 launched in the distant 2016, so it’s almost 8 years old. There are phones that even use Gorilla Glass 3 which came out in 2013.

Corning And its Partners Wanted To Offer Something New
Corning and its partners realized there was a need for a new model, but one that fits in a more modest budget while still aligning with the current trend of putting high-quality displays on mid-range phones. 10-bit and even 12-bit OLED displays are not uncommon.
And they’ve grown larger too, much bigger than the average display size that was offered in 2016 when Gorilla Glass 5 was launched. Hence, the company wanted to bring something between GG5 and Victus.
The company revealed that Oppo will be the first firm to unveil a phone with Gorilla Glass 7i. More details will be made available from Oppo itself. GG 7i will be used on phones, though it can be used for smartwatches and other devices that require scratch and fall-resistant glass.
