If you are someone who is ready to shell out a fortune on the best smartphone available out there, there’s something you might want to consider first. A flagship that only gets three years of updates means users will have to buy a new one after three years if they want to stay secure. Although phone update policies vary wildly by brand, most brands will tell users how long they will support their devices.
However, there’s one exception, and it’s Apple. The company has not provided a minimum guarantee for software support, though it has often bested other firms when talking about updates. Now, though, Apple has finally committed to a minimum support timeline for the iPhone, and it’s much less than what some of its competitors provide.

Apple Is Forced To Comply With UK’s PSTI Regulation
In April 2024, the UK’s Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regulation came into effect. This regulation forces companies that produce, import or distribute internet-capable devices in the UK to comply with certain security requirements.
Since iPhones are also internet-capable products, Apple is required to comply with the UK’s PST regulation. The company also released its compliance statement for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, revealing that its “defined support period” is a “minimum of five years from the first supply date.”
The PSTI regulation states that the “defined support period” is the “minimum length of time, expressed as a period of time with an end date, for which security updates will be provided.”
The PSTI defines a “security update,” as a “software update that protects or enhances the security of a product, including a software update that addresses security issues which have been discovered by or reported to the manufacturer.”

Apple Will Be Issuing Updates For Minimum 5 Years
Apple has confirmed to the UK government that it will be releasing security updates for a minimum of five years from the launch date of the iPhone 15. That said, the iPhone 15 is officially guaranteed to receive security updates until 2028.
As Dave Kleidermacher, VP of Engineering for Android Security & Privacy at Google, points out Apple is no longer offering the best security update policy in the market. Both Samsung and Google offer seven years of not just security updates but also Android updates for their flagship devices.
To Apple’s credit, it has long provided more than five years of security updates for its various iPhones. Some iPhones have received security updates six or more years after launch, which is way more support received by the majority of Android devices.
