Coming up with new tech in a much-crowded market seems like a big challenge, but now and then, a spawning fleet of products with new capabilities emerges. At least that has been the case in the last few years.
AI has been among those watershed moments, and now everyone wants a piece of it. Social media giant Meta seems to be jumping on the bandwagon with new wearables that will be powered by AI. A new report suggests the company has a new headphone in the works, which will come fitted with cameras and onboard AI.
The world has already seen what Meta can do with cameras integrated into eyewear as the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses have been received very well. Recently, Google’s Project Astra showed the world how gen AI interfaces can work with head-worn cameras.

Meta Wants To Add Cameras To Your Headphones
A new report from The Information suggests Meta is pumping money for a new project that would add cameras and AI to headphones, but there could be some hiccups along the way.
If Meta staff members are to be believed, the social media giant is betting big on a project internally called Camerabuds. While the name might suggest they are in-ear buds, Meta still hasn’t finalized the form factor yet. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has many designs in mind but hasn’t found them satisfactory.
As seen with Apple’s Vision Pro, onboard computing has made it bulky, so earbuds with cameras can only work if the processing is offloaded to a connected device, and current Bluetooth standards might not be up to spec to transmit real-time video an AI assistant would want.
The report also hints that Meta is currently focusing on overcoming potential obstruction by long hair and making sure the hardware stays cool because toasty ears could get uncomfortable in ordinary closed-back headphones as well.

Meta Wants To Join Other Firms In The AI Race
While Meta hasn’t put a word regarding the matter, it’s safe to assume that the company is working on a wearable camera concept. Apple’s Vision Pro is well-conceived but very bulky in size. Smaller devices such as the Rabbit R1 and Humane AI Pin failed to strike the right chords with users and were plagued by the same heating issues Meta is trying to curb.
Meta can be unpredictable when it comes to hardware projects. Its smart glasses became a reality, but the company shelved its smartwatch project and some other devices, including smart speakers dubbed Portal. However, headphones are a more consumer-friendly option, and users want to see a finished product in the coming years.
