With each Android update comes a lot of high-level, user-facing features that get a lot of attention from users, but they also make a lot of low-level, under-the-hood changes that can be really important for the user experience.

For instance, the Android 15 update could bring similar upgrades. At the Google I/O 2024 developer conference, the second beta of Android 15 was announced with headline-grabbing features like Private Space, App Pairs, better theft detection services, and a whole lot more.

But during the conference, the company also quietly shared some interesting stats about the new OS update, such as improving standby battery life by up to three hours on some devices.

Google Explains How It Achieved Battery Life Improvements

Google told Android Authority that marathon runs on smartwatches running Wear OS 5 consume up to 20% less power compared to Wear OS 4. The company achieved this by making a variety of optimizations, with one of them being a reduction in how long it takes for the device's main app processor to go back to sleep.

Samat talked about how Wear OS 5 defers even more background tasks to the time when a user’s watch is charging compared to when it is on the wrist. Picking the best time to run background tasks is a big challenge for not just Wear OS but for Android as well.

The OS tries to intelligently run as many background tasks at the same time during select ‘maintenance windows’ while the device is in a state where it’s been idle for some time and the screen is off. This doze mode has been a core feature of the OS’ power management since Android 6.0, and it’s witnessing further improvements in Android 15.

More Power-Saving Upgrades Coming To All Android Phones

The company could bring power-saving improvements to all Android devices in the coming days. Google seems to have sped up the time by 50%. This means that devices that have Android 15, will enter doze mode 50% faster compared to its speed in Android 14. It results in a better standby battery life, up to three hours on some devices that the company tested.

This new improvement could be extended to all devices that will be upgraded to Android 15. It includes Wear OS, though it’s worth noting that the upcoming Wear OS 5 platform update is based on Android 14, and not the latest one.

This seems like a welcomed change and something to look forward to in the Wear OS 6 update, assuming the company continues its yearly cycle of releasing Wear OS platform updates.
