Sony is raising the price of its PlayStation Plus subscription and the hike is set to hit the market next month. Sony announced that starting September 6, the annual subscription price for the Essential Plan will go from $60 up to $80. The Extra plan will go from $100 to $135, and the Premium plan from $120 to $160. For those who currently have a subscription, the price won’t go up until their next renewal date or November 6, whichever comes first.

Sony shared the news in a blog post announcing the new September line-up of games, which includes Saints Row, Black Desert – Traveler Edition, and Generation Zero. "We also wanted to let you know that starting September 6 we will be increasing the price for PlayStation Plus 12-month subscriptions globally across all benefit plans,” the company wrote. “This price adjustment will enable us to continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service.”

Subscribers Vent Sony's Random Price Hike For PlayStation Plus

Sony has not confirmed if the costs for the one and three-month subscribers will be increasing any time soon. Interestingly, the hike comes weeks after Microsoft ramped up the prices of Game Pass from $15 a month to $17. And though a year of PS Plus Premium is still $44 cheaper than a year of Game Pass, gamers have a lot of opinions on Sony's price jump especially since Sony has added no new features.
 

"Y'all better have some good Discount and great games on your Subscription from now n till the end of December to justify the price increase, But increasing the price to play Online or even the fact we have to pay to play online is a Big Fat L," wrote one user on X. "Let there be an online tier and people can increase for these free games tiers if they want. We didn't ask for these games," another user suggested.

While both PlayStation and Game Pass offer many similar features, one of the critical differences is Microsoft’s focus on putting its big first-party exclusives on the service (almost a week earlier for Premium subscribers). Sony has shared that doing the same for its first-party titles like Spider-Man 2 is not economically feasible. Moreover, the company has delayed several first-party titles beyond March 2024. Many users took to X to share that they might end up renewing Game Pass over Sony.

"No showcase, no future footprint when it comes to first-party games, and hardly any 1st party games in 2023.
