Highlights

  • The first trailer for GTA 6 featured a look at Vice City and Lucia, one of the two expected protagonists.

  • Rockstar Games has not shared a concrete GTA 6 release date with 2025 being the rough release window.

  • Leaks forced Rockstar Games to release the trailer much sooner than anticipated.

Plagued by leaks all through its development cycle, it seems that GTA 6 can't catch a break. With less than 24 hours to go, the trailer was leaked to the public, forcing Rockstar Games into releasing the trailer early. Clocking in at a minute and a half, the trailer provides an action-packed look at Vice City, the new female protagonist of Lucia, and a brief glimpse at the story behind Rockstar's most ambitious title yet. Here's a look at the trailer and all the bits of information it drops.

Set to “Love is a Long Road” by Tom Petty, the trailer opens with a few shots of Vice City's sunset before switching to a look at one of the new protagonists in the franchise, Lucia. Seen incarcerated for the first few moments, the trailer depicts the actions of Lucia and her partner-in-crime "Jason" (unconfirmed name) as they tear up Vice City on their journey.

Packed with action the minute-and-a-half-long trailer showcases multiple day-night cycles of the city, different weather conditions, boroughs of the city, and other features. Some of the most notable retentions from previous entries are the cars. At 0:34 in the trailer, players will see many beloved auto manufacturers like Pegassi, Invitero, and more, return with mainstay vehicles like the Turismo, and Coquette.

While Rockstar hasn't confirmed if the trailer is cinematic, gameplay, or in-engine, speculation suggests that in-engine footage has likely been used. Much like GTA 5, the trailer depicts the world in quite a raw form with a few unpolished rendering techniques (like the hair at 0:39 being grainy), leading fans to believe this is an in-engine preview.

The wait for a second trailer isn't expected to be too long as Rockstar has intentionally left a lot of information out in this entry. For starters, the male protagonist's name is never mentioned, but his connection to Lucia has been established. Set up as a 21st-century Bonnie and Clyde, the two protagonists are seen sticking up stores, escaping the cops, and constantly being on the run.

The release of the trailer comes after a multitude of leaks hitting Rockstar Games in the last week. While smaller leaks like the duration of the trailer weren't exactly harmful, others like a Rockstar employee's son leaking developer footage on TikTok certainly didn't help the company. To top it off, the trailer itself happened to leak less than a day from launch, forcing Rockstar's hand into publishing the trailer early. With the new look at the next game in one of gaming's biggest franchises going live, fans are going wild on social media sharing their thoughts and observations.
