OpenAI seems to have signed a deal with Reddit’s data API to gain access to real-time content. It means it can surface discussions from the site within ChatGPT and other new models. The new agreement is similar to the one Reddit signed with Google earlier in 2024 which was said to be worth $60 million.
The deal will also “enable Reddit to bring new AI-powered features to Redditors and mods” and leverage OpenAI’s large language models to build apps. Not just that, the company has also signed up to become an advertising partner on Reddit.
Redditors have been pretty vocal about how Reddit’s executives managed the platform before, and it is unclear how they will react to this announcement. Over 7,000 subreddits went blank in June 2023 following a protest from users when Reddit changed its API pricing. Recently, after the news of a partnership between OpenAI and Stack Overflow, a programming messaging board, people’s accounts were suspended after trying to delete their posts.

How Much Is OpenAI Paying Reddit For The Partnership
No financial details were revealed in the blog post that announced the deal, and neither firm had any mention of the training data. This is unlike Google and Reddit’s deal, where it was mentioned that Reddit would give Google “more efficient ways to train models.”
However, a disclosure mentions that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is also a shareholder in Reddit but that “This partnership was led by OpenAI’s COO and approved by its independent Board of Directors.”
“Reddit has become one of the internet’s largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up-to-date human conversations about anything and everything. Including it in ChatGPT upholds our belief in a connected internet, helps people find more of what they’re looking for, and helps new audiences find community on Reddit,” Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said.
The company hasn’t always been keen on allowing firms scraping its data to train AI models. Reddit threatened to block Google web crawlers from visiting the site. OpenAI also reportedly told the moderators of the subreddit r/ChatGPT that they violated OpenAI’s copyright by making use of the ChatGPT logo as a display image.

OpenAI Launches GPT-4o To Improve ChatGPT Capabilities
OpenAI’s newest update to its artificial intelligence model is capable of mimicking human cadences in its verbal responses and can even attempt to figure out people’s moods. While some could find the new model a minor update, OpenAI claims that it does work faster compared to its precursors and can reason across text, video, and audio in real-time.
GPT-4o, short form for “omni,” will power OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT chatbot, and will be available to users, including those who do not have a subscription, in the coming days. The company made this announcement during a short live-streamed update. CEO Sam Altman, who wasn’t present among the presenters at the event, posted the word “her” on X (formerly known as Twitter).
