Apple could introduce a new revamped version of Siri powered with generative AI. This would make the smart assistant more versatile and brush shoulders with the new generation AI chatbots.
Apple wants to give it the ability to chat with users rather than answering one question at a time, the New York Times reported. The new Siri upgrade, alongside Apple’s other AI offerings, could be launched at its WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) on June 10.
Apple seems to have no plans to directly take on ChatGPT with the new Siri upgrade. Rather, the tech giant wants to focus on making Siri better at tasks it already does, like creating calendar appointments, setting reminders, adding items to shopping lists, and much more. Siri could also get the ability to summarize text messages.

Apple Wants To Make Siri More Private Than Rivals
Apple is reportedly planning to position the new AI-backed version of Siri as more private than its competitors, as it will be able to process requests directly on iPhones instead of through cloud servers.
The company’s latest approach could give it an edge over the competition, such as better privacy, faster response times, and the ability to work without the internet or in places where internet connectivity is poor.
On the other side, on-device large language models (LLMs) might not be as powerful or knowledgeable as commercial chatbots such as ChatGPT or Gemin, which are backed by huge servers that have billions of parameters.

Why Is Apple Giving Siri A Generative AI Revamp?
The decision to provide Siri a “brain transplant” was reportedly decided last year after Apple’s top management including Craig Federighi and John Giannandrea spent weeks testing ChatGPT, which made Siri look a bit outdated.
Siri was first introduced to iPhones in 2011 and has been an important part of all the following generations ever since. However, the virtual assistant has been known to be bad at holding onto conversations and is instead limited to answering one-off queries. Moreover, Apple is finally trying to prove its mettle in the AI race, and a new upgrade to Siri is likely to be part of Apple’s wider efforts to embrace Gen AI across its business.
The New York Times report also suggests that the company is aiming to boost the memory in the iPhone 16 series to facilitate Siri’s new capabilities. The tech giant is also reportedly working on deals for complementary AI models from different companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Cohere.
