Alongside the launch of iPhone 16 and Apple Watch Series 10, Apple also announced its new AirPods Pro 2. The company also confirmed that the new headphones will soon be getting a hearing aid feature.
Through a software-based upgrade expected to be cleared by the Food and Drug Administration and available this fall, the hearing aid feature for AirPods Pro 2 joins a growing class of over-the-counter devices made for people with mild or moderate hearing loss.
While more factors like long-wear comfort and practicality will determine how AirPods will perform as hearing aids, they are said to give consumers a more approachable and more affordable choice for treating hearing loss.

Apple Announces Hearing Protection Feature
Apart from the hearing aid feature, Apple also announced active Hearing Protection and a clinically validated Hearing Test. For users with mild to moderate hearing loss, the AirPods Pro 2 will add an over-the-counter Hearing Aid capability. But first, users will be required to take Apple’s Hearing Test, which is a clinical-grade hearing test based on pure-tone audiometry that takes about 5 minutes to complete with the AirPods Pro 2 and a compatible iPhone or iPad.
People have already been able to upload hearing tests to the Health app to help hack their AirPods into hearing enhancers, but the company’s inclusion of its own test might make it more likely people will use the hearing health features.
Once the test is complete, users will be presented with a summary of their hearing test results, which will provide an audiogram and a number corresponding to hearing loss, along with a classification and recommendations. This data will be securely stored in the Health app, where it can also be shared with their healthcare provider.

When Will Apple Hearing Aid Feature Roll Out?
Both the hearing test and hearing air addition to the AirPods Pro 2 are planned to be released in fall 2024, the company said. It is important to note that the hearing aid feature is still awaiting marketing authorization from the FDA and other global health authorities.
The hearing aid and hearing test will be available on the AirPods Pro 2 through a firmware update. This will require users to pair with a compatible iPhone or iPad with iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 and later.
Apple also suggests certain features might not be available in all regions or all languages. However, over 100 countries and regions, including the US, Germany, and Japan -- will have access.
