Google seems to be gearing up for a big upgrade for Android’s Find My Device app. The company could be rolling out biometric unlock support for the app. For a long time, the point of the Find My Device app on Android is to only locate the user’s lost smartphone, tablet, or someone else’s Android device.

Also, it wasn’t used very often, and also made sense to be locked down more than other apps on the device. By default, the Find My Device app asks users to enter their Google account whenever they open it, or just leave it unlocked.

New Update To Allow Users Lock The App With Biometrics

As spotted by Android Authority, Google will soon be rolling out a new update for the app that will enable users to lock the app behind biometric unlock, making it easier to access while still staying secure.

The change was enabled manually within the app, although it’s not clear which app version was used. The company hasn’t updated the Find My Device app since April of this year, so it seems odd that this is surfacing now.

It is possible that the change was delivered through Google Play Services, as the same report also shows that the company is making progress on its new “Remote Lock” menu. It was announced at Google I/O and will be released “later this year.”

Regardless of what’s the case, it’s good to see Google pushing hard to make these features available to users. Losing a device could be problematic and, thanks to the upcoming feature of the Find My Device network and several AirTag-like products coming to the market, Android users will have several options to choose from.

Google To Bring New Anti-Theft Tools For Android Phones

Google has just announced some new features that should help users protect their Android device alongside the valuable data it has, in case it gets stolen. These features would allow users to help thwart a thief’s attempts to resell a device or gain access to its data.

Considering the current artificial intelligence frenzy, AI plays a crucial role in one of the new features Google has rolled out. Dubbed Theft Detection Lock, the feature uses AI to determine if someone has snatched a user’s phone out of their hand and then tried to escape by running, driving, or cycling. If the Android smartphone detects a similar sequence of events, it will automatically lock the phone, denying access to everything contained within it.

Another tool that will help users in such a scenario is Offline Device Lock. This feature will automatically lock the device’s screen if it has been disconnected from the internet for a long duration. It will also lock the screen if several unsuccessful authentication attempts have been made.

Highlights

  • Sam Altman has now offered an official update on the future of GPT-5 during a recent AMA session on Reddit.

  • Recently, OpenAI announced a new search functionality in ChatGPT, taking it on par with Microsoft’s Bing and Google Search.

  • The new search feature is powered by the GPT-4o model and is a more evolved version of the SearchGPT.

OpenAI’s last major Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPT) release, GPT-4, launched in March 2023, and since then, ChatGPT users have been eagerly waiting for the next big upgrade.

Although OpenAI introduced GPT-4o, a version of GPT-4 with enhanced text, vision, and audio capabilities earlier this year, there has been no sign of a significant new model release. However, Sam Altman has now offered an official update on the future of GPT-5 during a recent AMA session on Reddit.

When asked about the launch date and features of GPT-5, Altman said, “We have some very good releases coming later this year! nothing that we are going to call GPT-5, though.” Altman’s response indicates that while GPT-5 itself could not be on OpenAI’s roadmap, users can expect a new model launch by the end of 2025.

OpenAI Challenging Google With ChatGPT Search

Responding to questions regarding the delay surrounding the GPT-5 release, Altman said, “All of these models have gotten quite complex and we can't ship as many things in parallel as we'd like to. (we also face a lot of limitations and hard decisions about we allocated our compute towards many great ideas.)”

Recently, OpenAI announced a new search functionality in ChatGPT, taking it on par with Microsoft’s Bing and Google Search. The new search feature is powered by the GPT-4o model and is a more evolved version of the SearchGPT prototype launched by the company earlier this year.

The ChatGPT search feature is triggered by default based on what the user is looking for. This is also an option to manually activate the search functionality by clicking on the new web search icon, located just adjacent to the attachment icon.

A Reddit user also asked Altman what advantages SearchGPT offers over Google to which Altman said, “For many queries, I find it to be a way faster/easier way to get the information I'm looking for. I think we'll see this, especially for queries that require more complex research. I also look forward to a future where a search query can dynamically render a custom web page in response!”

OpenAI Now Lets Users Search Through Their ChatGPT History

Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT, OpenAI’s text-generating artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, has taken the digital world by storm. With the help of ChatGPT, users can generate responses to their questions, requests, and commands. Earlier in 2023, OpenAI also announced a new feature called ‘memory’ for ChatGPT that can recall information discussed in previous conversations.

Now, the company has brought a new way to efficiently view or manage all the previous chat conversations with the introduction of a search feature for the web app. The company announced the feature through a new post on X, “We’re starting to roll out the ability to search through your chat history on ChatGPT web. Now you can quickly & easily bring up a chat to reference, or pick up a chat where you left off.”

  • Now, users will also be able to upload PDFs, Google Docs, websites, YouTube videos, and more to NotebookLM.

Google has recently announced the launch of seven new AI updates that provide more ways for users to ask queries, search for information, and get an AI overview across products.

Now, users will be able to ask maps more complex questions, like “things to do with friends” to get answers curated with Gemini, quick answers to questions about a place -- in addition to helpful review summaries when users don’t have time to read through each one, according to Google.

“The latest AI update in Maps means that whether you’re traveling across town or around the world, you can get the most up-to-date information possible when you need it. Make sure to also check out the new updates we’re making to Waze, Google Earth, and our developer products,” said the company.

Google Services Get Better With Artificial Intelligence

Now, users will also be able to upload PDFs, Google Docs, websites, YouTube videos, and more to NotebookLM to get new insights and deeper dives into new topics. Google Shopping has rolled out new AI to help users pick the right product for them. The new Google Shopping leverages AI to help take the guesswork out of finding the right products.

“For example, when researching a product, an AI-generated brief will give you more details about the most important things to know before buying. And, as you browse the results, you will see AI-generated briefs about what to consider before making a purchase, plus the products that may (or may not) be a good fit for your needs,” explained Google.

Google Search got a major AI update, expanding the types of questions people can ask. Last month, the company introduced even more updates, including helping people to identify songs in Circle to Search. All Chromebooks will now come with the Gemini app, and Chromebook Plus laptops include new Google AI productivity tools such as Live Translate, and Chromebook Plus laptops come with new Google AI productivity tools like Live Translate, help me write, the Recorder app and Welcome Recap, helping users pick up from where they left off when logging into a Chromebook.

Google Developing AI Agent To Control Your Web Browser

Google is reportedly looking to sidestep the complexity of AI-driven automation by allowing its multimodal large language models (LLMs) to take control of users’ browsers. As per a report published by The Information, citing several unnamed sources, “Project Jarvis” could be available in preview as early as December and enable the model to harness a web browser to "gather research, purchase a product, or book a flight."

The service apparently will be restricted to Chrome and from what users gather will take advantage of Gemini’s ability to parse visual data along with written language to enter text and navigate web pages on the user’s behalf.

Pixelmator Wants To Reach Bigger Audience With Apple

Pixelmator has been developing apps for iOS and Mac and has been name-checked by the Cupertino tech giant several times during its product launches. “We’ve been inspired by Apple since day one, crafting our products with the same razor-sharp focus on design, ease of use, and performance,” said Pixelmator.

The company also said that it is looking forward to reaching a bigger audience. “It’s crazy what a small group of dedicated people have been able to achieve over the years from all the way in Vilnius, Lithuania.
