Sony PlayStation 5 sales have surpassed 59.2 million units worldwide, the company revealed. The company published its most recent financial earnings for the 4th quarter of its current fiscal year, announcing that the company managed to sell 20.8 million PS5 devices during the year.

This is pretty low compared to the revised sales target of 21 million that the firm set some months ago. As revealed by Sony, 4.5 million PS5 consoles were sold during the Q4 of 2023. For reference, Sony managed to sell 6.3 million units during the same quarter last year.

Sony Expects Sales To Decline This Year

With global PS5 sales declining year-over-year, Sony believes sales will further go down to 18 million during its current fiscal year (FY24). Back in December of 2023, it was reported that PS5 was tracking in on PS4 time-aligned sales, but with PS5 sales now going down YoY, it seems questionable whether the console will surpass PS4’s lifetime sales.

Besides, Tom Warren revealed that during the company’s conference call, Arrowhead's hit game Helldivers 2 managed to sell over 12 million copies across both PS5 and PC till May. It means that those copies were sold within 12 weeks.

What’s interesting is that three weeks after the game’s launch in early February, Arrowhead reported that over 3 million units were sold. This also means that over 9 million additional copies were sold in 9 weeks, averaging around 1 million a week.

PS5 Update To Let Users Join Parties With QR Code

PS5 users will soon be allowed to join parties using a QR code. A new update seems to be on the way for PS5 users, which will bring this new feature to the console.

As suggested in the latest post from PlayStation Blog, the company has announced that soon it will be introducing the ability for users to create a shareable link on their PS5 consoles or the dedicated app and send it to other players via social media and messaging apps. Once a player clicks on the link from the QR code, they will be able to join the sender’s multiplayer session, even if they aren’t connected to each other on the PS Network.

"This feature is designed to complement existing methods of joining a session from within a PS5 game and is consistent for any supported PS5 game," the post reads. "As this is a new technology, a small percentage of PS5 games may require an update to ensure the session joins will work seamlessly. We’ll collaborate with our development partners to explore the best solutions for those games."
