Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 To Monitor Atrial Fibrillation With AI

Samsung launched the Galaxy AI alongside its flagship Galaxy S24 series at the start of this year, and the new Bespoke range of appliances also leverages AI than ever before. Now, it makes sense for the company to use these AI tools for its wearable range of devices. The company has suggested that it will be bringing these AI features to its upcoming Galaxy Watches.

However, the company hasn’t revealed how it wants these AI tools to enhance the experience on its smartwatches this year. There’s no word on how the Galaxy Watch 7 lineup will make use of AI to its advantage, but a recent patent application might have spilled the beans.

As per the patent application published recently by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Samsung might have figured out how to bring “continuous atrial fibrillation detection via PPG and ECG signal translation” to Galaxy Watches with the help of Gen AI.

Samsung To Use AI For ECG And AFib On Galaxy Watch 7

Samsung smartwatches come with ECG capabilities and atrial fibrillation (AFib) detection. However, this isn’t a continuous process. Users who wish to take an ECG are required to keep their fingers against the smartwatch’s sensors and wait for the reading to complete.

This new patent application hints that the company could soon enable its watches to take continuous AFib monitoring by using Gen AI by translating PPG signals into ECG signals. This means that Samsung is capable of translating heart rate monitoring signals into ECG signals using AI, allowing it to enable AFib detection.

Samsung signed the patent application on August 30, 2023, and published it in late April. It describes “A system and a method […] for AFib detection using ECG signals generated from monitored PPG signals […].”

When Will Samsung Launch The Galaxy Watch 7 Lineup?

In the “abstract” section it is mentioned that the method can translate the measured PPG signals into ECG signals leveraging a dynamic model and analyze the translated ECG signals using an AFib detection model “trained on measured ECG signals for AFib detection.”

The company is also aware of the errors the use of Gen AI could lead to. “Fake information may be introduced, which affects an AFib detection result.” However, Samsung describes a way to eliminate these issues by “incorporating prior knowledge in terms of probabilistic graphical models.”

Samsung could launch the Galaxy Watch 7 series in July at the next Unpacked launch event, which is expected to be held in Paris, two weeks before the 2024 Olympic Games kick off. Early leaks have hinted that the company might release a new Ultra Watch model and at one Galaxy Watch 7 could feature a rectangular design.
