If rumors and speculations are to be believed, OpenAI has a new search engine in the works and it could be announced on May 9, 2024. If there is some truth to these rumors, the announcements could send ripples in the current search engine space, and it would be a strategic move for Microsoft, a major investor and partner of OpenAI, and a big rival of Google.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has talked about developing a more intuitive search experience that offers something more than what current search engines could. And, if turns out to be appealing, it could pose a great challenge to Google’s monopoly in the search engine space. If the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other GPT-related tech is anything to consider, it’s possible that the new search engine could capture the ongoing AI trend.

OpenAI To Challenge Google With Its Own Search Engine
One of the sources, @apples_jimmy, has claimed that OpenAI is planning to hold an event and even has a poster on X. The user also claimed that OpenAI was advertising for in-house events staff and marketing positions in January 2024, and hired an events manager in April. The user wrote: Guess they can’t help themselves to upstage Google I/O.”
Google I/O is the company’s annual developer’s conference that will happen on May 14, 2024, and it is where Google usually takes the wraps off of its latest products and other developments. The company is said to be planning to launch AI answers ahead of search results in certain regions, and if this happens to be true, this may itself be an attempt to beat OpenAI by offering an experience that truly differentiates itself.
Google’s plan to use AI to answer users’ queries hasn’t proved to be too popular, and some people believe that it is high time that users get a new search engine that challenges Google’s supremacy. If OpenAi really has a Google rival in the works, a May 9 launch could outshine Google I/O.

It’s believed that if OpenAI really has such a product in store for users, the company might take full advantage of its partnership with Microsoft, and use the latter’s knowledge and expertise with its search engine Bing to provide a truly unique search experience.
That said, everything is just speculation at the moment, but there have been other reports that seem to corroborate them. Such reports have been floating around since February this year. While not much is known about the search engine, there have been rumors that the tool could be integrated into the existing ChatGPT chatbot, or even might be a standalone offering.
