Apple seems to be testing a new anti-reflective optical coating technology for upcoming iPhone cameras that would enhance the quality of images by reducing artifacts like lens flare and ghosting, at least that’s what the rumors suggest.

 

As per the news aggregator account “yeux1122” on the Naver blog, citing a source in Apple’s supply chain, the iPhone maker is planning to introduce new atomic layer deposition (ALD) equipment in the iPhone’s camera lens manufacturing process.

 

ALD is a process where materials are deposited one atomic layer at a time on a substrate, enabling very accurate control over the composition and thickness. This process allows manufacturers to apply very thin layers of materials on chipsets, including the device’s camera components.

How Will New iPhones Benefit From ALD Tech

 

For the camera lenses, ALD will come in handy to apply the anti-reflective coating, which will allow Apple to reduce photographic artifacts like streaks of light and halos that usually make it to the final image. It usually happens when a bright light source such as the sun shines directly into the camera.

 

ALD can also curb ghosting, a kind of image distortion where secondary images appear in the photo, usually a bright light source. Ghosting happens when light reflects back and forth between the surfaces of the lens and the sensors of the camera.

 

Moreover, ALD-applied materials will also protect camera lens system against environmental damage without hindering the sensor’s ability to capture light effectively. The report also claims that the manufacturing process will only be used for the “Pro” model in Apple’s next flagship lineup, which could mean it will be available to one or both premium models in the iPhone 16 series.

 

The upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models are said to come packed with tetraprism lens with up to 5x optical zoom -- something currently seen on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple usually unveils the new-generation iPhones around mid-September.

Apple Planning To Use AI-Powered M4 Chips For Macs

 

Apple is contemplating an overhaul for Macs, which will be incorporating M4 chips that will heavily focus on artificial intelligence (AI). The report suggests that the new Macs will be unveiled later this year, with the rest of the lineup set to launch early in 2025.

 

Apple has recently launched its first MacBook Pro with an M3 chipset in November last year, and as per reports, the company is “nearing production” on the M4 chip. Apple has reportedly shifted focus on M4’s AI-processing capabilities, which could be in response to other rival AI PCs that have affected Mac sales.
