Apple is expected to bring a lot of AI features to its upcoming iPhones. The company is expected to announce the iOS 18 at WWDC 2024 next month, but rumors suggest that these AI features might not be available for all iPhones.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his latest Power On newsletter, the upcoming iOS 18 will pack several AI features, including a more natural Siri and voice memo transcriptions. However, these features will only be available to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, alongside the new iPhone 16 and 16 Pro series.
Talking about the new AI features, Gurman stated that "most of the on-device features will be supported by iPhone, iPad, and Mac chips released in the last year or so." For the iPhone, it means the A17 Pro chip, which was launched in September 2023, but might exclude the A16 Bionic chip, which was launched in September 2022.

Apple To Significantly Upgrade The Neural Engine
These rumors are only referring to AI features that will be processed on-device. Users can also expect some cloud-based AI features, as the company has reportedly roped in OpenAI for the same. Cloud-based features could be available for all iPhones capable of running iOS 18. That would be ideal, as the new operating system is said to support the same iPhones as iOS 17.
For on-device AI features, there will probably be a cut-off for software support, and these latest rumors suggest that even recent models such as the iPhone 15 or iPhone 14 Pro could see some restrictions on the iOS 18 features they are capable of supporting.
This could be because the A17 Pro chip used for the iPhone 15 Pro took a significant jump in the number of operations it could manage per second. There have been rumors about the iPhone 16 series significantly upgrading the neural engine. A neural processing unit (NPU) powers on-device AI and machine learning tasks, though it’s likely that the rumored A18 pro chipset could be restricted to an iPhone 16 Pro series.

Apple has stuck with 12MP ultrawide for its smartphones since it launched the iPhone 11. This could change with the next flagship, according to various rumors, with the latest one offering more details about the module’s specifications.
Leaker baby sauce OvO took to the Chinese social media website Weibo that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will equipped with 48MP ultra-wide cameras. Apple is said to leverage Sony’s IMX903 sensor, which will replace the IMX633 sensor.
