Apple is playing catch up with other OEMs and making strides in artificial intelligence. The company is planning to make all the new AI features available for iPhone users through iOS 18. As per Bllomberg’s Mark Gurman, these new features will work seamlessly on-device and won’t require an internet connection.

Gurman notes that iPhones will handle all the AI functions without having to turn to the cloud. This will allow users to access AI features quickly and remain private at the same time.

Samsung Galaxy AI, on the other hand, enables users to decide whether to run certain AI features on-device or through the cloud. This will allow users to decide whether they want a less ambitious version of the feature with more privacy or a version that offers high performance but with less protection for privacy.

There seems to be a drawback in Apple’s plan. It looks like iPhone users might not be able to leverage the full potential of AI without cloud computers that can handle more complex AI algorithms. Since most of the processing will happen on-device through iOS 18, it could limit the tasks that can be performed.

Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT need to go through the cloud to run on devices. Gurman suggests that Apple needs to allow some cloud-based AI features to be available on iOS 18 and get Google’s Gemini or another AI onboard.

Previously, Apple was rumored to be working with OpenAI and Google; however, it was speculated that a gen-AI chatbot will not be coming to Apple devices with the iOS 18 update. If the company plans to keep AI processing restricted to the device, skipping a chatbot makes sense, since LLMs require access to servers through the cloud to function properly.

Apple To Launch iOS 18 At WWDC 2024

All rumors will be put to rest when Apple announces its iOS 18 on June 10th at WWDC 2024. Apple fanatics will know what the company has in store for them when it comes to AI.

The next update is already been touted as the biggest update to the OS since the first iPhone was launched in 2007. It is believed to be the first OS to help iPhone users handle everyday tasks using AI.

The head of technology research at Melius Research, Ben Reitzes, has claimed that Apple will announce an AI App Store during WWDC. This app store will offer AI-related apps for iPhones.
