Reports suggest that a remake or remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion may be in development. A Reddit user said to be a former employee of Virtuos made the claim, in a now-deleted post on a gaming subreddit (the user was reportedly verified by the subreddit’s mods as a legitimate former Virtuos employee). Virtuos is a Singapore-based studio that specialises in remakes and famously helped Konami with the Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake recently.

The insider claimed that the Paris branch of Virtuos is working on an updated version of Oblivion code-named Altar, which may release in late 2024 or early 2025. They further shared that the studio is also working on a narrative climbing game, a new AAA game named Massive, the next New World expansion and Metal Gear Solid Delta. Although it's not clear whether the game would be a remake or a remaster, it will make use of a ‘pairing system’ that will run on both Unreal Engine 5 and the Oblivion engine.

Thanks to the Internet, Interest in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remains Quite High

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was released in 2006 as an open-world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios. Set during the Third Era, six years after the events of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, the game unfolds in Cyrodiil, which is a province of Tamriel.

In the game, players assumed the role of the Hero of Kvatch, a prisoner in the Imperial Prison which holds a secret entrance. The Emperor of Tamriel and his bodyguards pass the player's cell to escape from assassins. The main player was tasked with thwarting a fanatical cult known as the Mythic Dawn with plans to open portal gates to a demonic realm known as Oblivion.

Upon its release the game was deemed 'one of the greatest games ever made,' and soon after, Bethesda released two expansion packs for the game, namely Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, which were bundled with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition in 2007.
