PlayStation just announced the "India Hero Project", a new incubator program focused on "identifying and supporting emerging talent" from the region. The program will allow independent Indian studios and developers to work closely with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and develop games with access to SIE's internal resources and development funding.
The program is inviting submissions from Indian independent developers and could potentially be a great opportunity for studios to get their projects published by SIE. For PlayStation, this gets them a direct line to the independent development scene in India, boosting their presence in the region in a massive way. The registration link is open now and studios can apply to the India Hero Project. To be eligible for the program, the developer must be:
PlayStation has been able to find reasonable success in the past with this style of incubator programs, most notably with the China Hero Project, which resulted in games like F.I.S.T: Forged in Shadow Torch, ANNO: Mutaionem, and more.
"Today, we are thrilled to announce the India Hero Project. This incubator program aims to identify promising local developers and support them in bringing compelling gaming experiences to global gaming communities," explain Hector Fernandez and Radhika Thakur of SIE. "As part of our evolving journey to ensure that PlayStation remains the best place to play, we’re committed to developing regional incubator programs capable of identifying new and diverse developers worldwide. The India Hero Project is fueled by this commitment and our belief in the Indian gaming market."
The PlayStation India Hero Project does not have a minimum or maximum team size limit, which means, even one-person companies are encouraged to apply. Applicants can apply for a minimum of $100,000 USD.
The Indian game development scene is incredibly exciting right now with a number of great projects currently in development. The India Hero Project could allow for bold, creative voices to have their game showcased prominently through SIE and PlayStation's vast resources and undeniable cultural positioning. The India Hero Project's primary platform focus is PlayStation 5 and PC, although, mobile titles will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
