  • Marvel's Wolverine development continues despite security incident at Insomniac Games.

  • Insomniac Games is issuing DMCAs actively against individuals who have downloaded the leaked gameplay.

Insomniac Games issued a statement for the first time after Rhysida, a renowned ransomware group, leaked gameplay footage of the studio's upcoming title, Marvel's Wolverine. In their statement, Insomniac thanked their audience for the support. They discussed the studio's "distressing experience" over the past few days and how the team is "saddened and angered" by the incident.

Last week, Rhysida claimed to have hacked into Insomniac's server to steal confidential details, including employee's personal information, the company's private documents and emails, and under-development clips of Marvel's Wolverine. Rhysida leaked all this information to the public after Insomniac failed to meet the ransomware group's demand of $2 million, creating a stir in the gaming community.

On 19 December 2023, the Rhysida ransomware group made their stolen data from Insomniac's server public, including the studio's confidential documents and files. The highlight of the leak was the design and gameplay recordings of Marvel's Wolverine, which looks to be Insomniac's first game of a planned X-Men trilogy.

As per reports by Cyber Daily, one leaked document was a publishing agreement between Marvel and Sony Interactive Entertainment, signed by Isaac Perlmutter, Marvel's entertainment chairperson, and Jim Ryan, Sony's president. The publishing agreement revealed that Insomniac had plans to develop the X-Men trilogy with Marvel's Wolverine being the first entry into the series. The document stated that Wolverine is set to release by 1 September 2025, whereas the subsequent titles will be out by 31 December 2029 and 31 December 2033, respectively.

Insomniac Games acknowledged the stolen data and stated:

We are aware that the stolen data includes personal information belonging to our employees, former employees, and independent contractors. It also includes early development details about Marvel's Wolverine for PlayStation 5.

With Marvel's Wolverine leak, the Insomniac Games might take time to tweak the game and push their release deadline. Insomniac Games mentioned in their statement that:

However, like Logan, Insomniac is resilient. Marvel's Wolverine continues as planned. The game is in early production and will no doubt greatly evolve throughout development, as do all our plans.
While we appreciate everyone's enthusiasm, we will share official information about Marvel's Wolverine when the time is right. On behalf of everyone at Insomniac, thank you for your ongoing support during this challenging time.

Insomniac Games added that they are quickly looking into the matter to determine the full impact of the leaked data. The studio has also started issuing DMCAs to everyone who spread the leaked footage. One Reddit user even shared the screenshot of the Notice of Action under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that they received. The notice asked the culprit to check for the mentioned filenames and delete them.
