FromSoftware's lead composer Yuka Kitamura is leaving the Japanese studio. The composer played a significant role in the music production for highly anticipated games such as Elden Ring (the game received recognition for its original score at the National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers award for Outstanding Original Dramatic Score in 2022), Dark Souls 2 & 3, Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice and Armored Core Verdict Day.
Kitamura took to Twitter to announce her departure from FromSoftware. "Thank you all for your continued support. Today I have an announcement to make. I have decided to leave FromSoftware, the company I worked for, and to start working new as a freelance composer this August," the composer tweeted. She also shared her new website with her followers. "I would like to continue to express myself in-game music through various genres of music. I hope you will look forward to my music in the future! I have created a new website."
End Of An Era, Say Fans As Lead Composer Exits FromSoftware
Kitamura joined FromSoftware in 2012 and made her debut in Armored Core: Verdict Day, which came out in 2013. However, it's the Elden Ring soundtrack that has often been referred to as Kitamura's best work. The composer worked with names like Tsukasa Saitoh, Shoi Miyazawa, Yoshimi Kudo and Tai Tomisawa to create a 67-track orchestral score for the game, that paid homage to the studio’s past. Some of Kitamura's most notable tracks include the Abyss Watchers’ theme and Gael's Theme from Dark Souls 3 and Divine Dragon from Sekiro.
Fans of the studio took to social media to share their reaction to Kitamura's announcement to leave FromSoftware after 12 years. "Yuka Kitamura to me is the single greatest composer of all time and to me seeing her leave Fromsoft is like seeing Miyazaki leave, it genuinely hurts Sekiro and Dark Souls 3 are as magical as they are because of her music, she changed my life and I'll always be thankful," wrote one user.
