Bethesda’s upcoming Indiana Jones game will be coming exclusively to Xbox and PC. Pete Hines, Bethesda’s head of global publishing, confirmed this during the much-publicised FTC v. Microsoft case. Bethesda had originally planned the Indiana Jones game as a multiplatform release. But that changed when Microsoft acquired Bethesda, at which point it was made an Xbox console exclusive.
The game was originally announced in 2021, months before Microsoft finalised its $7.5 billion deal to acquire ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks. The rumours surrounding the game's exclusivity began circulating when Microsoft announced its intention to acquire Bethesda Game Studios.
Indian Jones Is Being Developed by MachineGames X Lucasfilm
Indiana Jones will be available on day one on Xbox Game Pass. It is being developed by MachineGames, in collaboration with a new Lucasfilm label. Hines was recently questioned as part of witness testimony in the FTC v. Microsoft hearing. The trial also revealed that Disney had a contract for multiple consoles and that the deal was amended after Microsoft’s Bethesda acquisition to be just for Xbox consoles.
"You’re dealing with a licensor who is giving a ton of feedback on what you’re making, is going to add a ton of time to your scheduling, these agreements, you don’t get to take as long as you want, you have a window of time in which you’re going to release a game, you immediately have a clock that’s ticking on you," Hines said.
Microsoft has until July 18 to close its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Otherwise, it has to pay $3 billion in breakup fees or renegotiate new terms. Besides FTC, UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has also decided to block the deal. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will appear at a San Francisco courtroom this week to defend against the FTC’s preliminary injunction request. Xbox chief Phil Spencer, PlayStation chief Jim Ryan and a few other executives are also expected to take the stand.
