In 2023, Samsung teased an XR project that it had joined forces with Qualcomm and Google. The South Korean tech giant never really gave out more information on what kind of wearable this XR device would be, but now Qualcomm has spilled some beans on the project.
While speaking to CNBC, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon revealed that Samsung’s formerly nebulous upcoming XR product is a pair of mixed reality smart glasses. Previously, rumors hinted that the product would be a headset. There were even leaked images of a headset prototype. The CEO added that these smart glasses would link to the user’s smartphone and it’ll be “a new product.”

Samsung’s Mixed-Reality Smart Glasses To Pack AI
Amon went on to say:
“What I really expect to come out of this partnership, I want everyone that has a phone to go buy companion glasses to go along with it. I think we need to get to the point that the glasses are going to be no different than wearing regular glasses or sunglasses. And then with that, we can get scale.”
Besides, it seems like the smart glasses will come equipped with AI that will run on the cloud.“AI is going to run on the device. It’s going to run on the cloud,” Amon said. “It’s going to run some in the glass, some in the phone, but at the end of the day, there’s going to be whole new experiences.”
However, the question still remains whether these smart glasses will be the same device that was showcased during the Project Astra demo at Google I/O. Not much is known about Samsung’s XR project currently, outside the fact that it will run on Android and will be powered by a Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2 chipset. At the Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung’s TM Roh teased its new XR platform would be launched this year.

Samsung Could Take Over Nokia’s Mobile Network For $10 Bn
As per a new report, Samsung might take over Nokia’s mobile network infrastructure business. It was recently reported that Nokia and Samsung are in talks about selling the former’s mobile network business group to the latter. If this turns out to be true, Samsung will become a major player in the global network infrastructure business.
As per a Bloomberg report, Samsung has shown interest in acquiring Nokia’s telecom equipment business. Nokia has struggled to compete with major players, such as Ericsson and Huawei in the last few years. So, the company discussed all the possible options with its advisors, which included selling some or all of the division or merging with one of its competitors.
