Connectivity woes have become a concern in recent times, and that’s also something Pixel users have been dealing with a lot lately. Thankfully, the situation seems to be improving, and the upcoming Pixel 9 series could fix it for good.
As per the new report from Android Authority, the Pixel 9 series is set to have some modern upgrades, which will come packed with satellite connectivity as well. Modems have been identified as a source of problems on Pixels since Google turned to its semi-custom Tensor chips a few years ago.
Since Google joined forces with Samsung’s S.LSI division to develop the chipsets, the company chose to use Exynos modems to make the process easy. Previous Pixel phones used Qualcomm modems.

Google’s Tensor G4 Chipset To Change Things Around
The upcoming Pixel 9 series will be powered by the Tensor G4 chipset, bringing a new modem: the Samsung Modem 5400. It might not be a Qualcomm model that many would like to see, but it’s still an upgrade over the previous iterations. The report suggests that the new modem will be faster and more power-efficient than its precursors.
Moreover, there will be upgrades in the software front, which will help improve the stability. Lastly, the modem will support 3GPP Rel. 17 which supports 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN), or satellite-based communication. The modem will be seen on all cellular-enabled Tensor G4 devices, including the Pixel 9 series. It will also be seen on the next generation Pixel Fold, which is rumored to carry the moniker -- Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
Previous reports suggested that Google has made huge leaps in incorporating support for satellite-based messaging in Android 15. With NTN support in the Exynos Modem 5400, the Pixel 9 series will become the first to support Android’s native satellite implementation.
In the initial stages, the feature will be offered through T-Mobile, with other providers joining the fleet in the coming months. The satellite link will enable users to text, but not call. Moreover, a dedicated “Satellite Gateway” app will allow users to communicate with emergency services through a feature dubbed “Emergency SOS.”

How Will The Emergency SOS Feature Work
We already have an idea about how this feature could work, but here’s how it would work on the Pixel 9 series. Firstly, users will be asked some basic questions, which will help narrow down the situation.
The users will be given a choice to send a notification to their emergency contacts, after which users will able to message using emergency services to get help. Most of the questions will also come with a predefined answer to choose from to make the process hassle-free.
