It has been a while since we've heard from PlayStation Studios and the things they've been working on, but as Summer rolls around, the blue brand might be looking to show off its upcoming projects. According to claims by journalist Jeff Grubb, PlayStation could be gearing up for a Showcase towards the end of May. Sony is yet to confirm any sort of showcase or State of Play but has announced their presence at this year's Summer Game Fest.

With the Summer Game Fest taking place on June 9, it will be interesting to see if Sony decides to hold showcases back-to-back. There is also the possibility of the rumoured "showcase" focusing more on the hardware side of things as there have been rumours about a "PS5 Pro" and a handheld cloud device for a while now. PlayStation Studios have been one of the most exciting AAA publishers at the moment and will be looking to show off massive upcoming projects such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us multiplayer title Naughty Dog have been working on.

What Could PlayStation Have in Store for Gamers this Summer?

Since 2017, Sony has yet to attend a single E3, instead, choosing to announce new titles, and projects and provide updates on announced titles with the State of Play and PlayStation Showcase. The Summer Game Fest looks like the prime spot for any new announcements from PlayStation. Summer Game Fest will take place on June 9, 2023, and will feature the likes of Activision, EA, Xbox, and other major AAA publishers.

It stands to reason that the rumoured Showcase in May might focus on hardware instead of games. The PS5 has been selling incredibly well this year and is due for a refresh soon. This could mean the release of a Pro variant, which usually comes around this time in the console's lifetime. However, given that the availability of the console has just only seemed to improve, it is likely that Sony might hold off on a new hardware launch for the PS5 just yet.

PlayStation is yet to make any sort of confirmation or indication of a Showcase just yet, but rest assured, there are going to be announcements from Sony this Summer. With Xbox looking to ramp things up significantly this year, Sony is going to be facing tough competition from their rival brand in the form of games such as Bethesda's highly-anticipated RPG, Starfield.

Sony has established a new direction for their projects with a clear focus on live-service, multiplayer games. Some of their biggest studios, such as Naughty Dog and Bungie, are known to be working on games in that genre at the moment. It will be interesting to see how Sony sets the tone this Summer as it is likely going to be the direction of their games for several years to come.
