Online games, and games in general, have made significant headway in India, becoming one of the country's fastest-growing industries - amassing a massive audience over the years. Games like BGMI, Free Fire, and COD Mobile have been instrumental in bringing gaming to the mainstream in the country.
However, with the growing popularity of online games such as these, there has also been some level of conflation with online gambling. Recently, MeitY addressed the game development community's concerns in India and outlined a clear distinction between games that promote gambling and online games. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has now detailed the 3 kinds of games that will be banned in India.
"For the first time, we have prepared a framework regarding online gaming, in that we will not allow 3 types of games in the country," said Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar. "Games that involve betting or can be harmful to the user and that involves a factor of addiction will be banned in the country."

Games that Promote Gambling/Betting Might Get the Axe in India
To summarise, the Union Minister's comments cover 3 types of games that could be banned:
- Games involving betting,
- Games with the potential to be harmful to the user,
- Games that involve a certain factor of addiction
While this is the general outline of the categories under the threat of a ban in the country, there will likely be a detailed framework that clearly defines the parameters under which games are classified under any of these categories.
The Indian gaming community recently celebrated the return of BGMI to India as part of a 3-month trial phase, in which it will be monitored by the Government for user harm reduction. What this means is that the authorities will closely evaluate the game's potential for user addiction.
The authorities will take a final call regarding BGMI after the 3-month trial phase and fans can only hope that the game doesn't get the axe again. BGMI is one of the key tentpole games in India with a massive player base as well as a flourishing esports ecosystem. It will be interesting to see if the authorities will reveal a detailed framework for the categorization of games under the categories detailed by the incumbent Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship of India, Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
