Ubisoft just teased a new Assassin's Creed VR project, "Assassin's Creed Nexus". The game is currently shrouded in mystery as details on it are still sparse, except for a crest and logo for the game. The game will get a full reveal on June 12's Ubisoft Forward event.
The Ubisoft Forward event is likely to be dominated by Assassin's Creed chatter as there are plenty of interesting projects currently in development. In addition to their big AAA console and PC release, Assassin's Creed Mirage, Ubisoft has a lot cooking up on platforms like mobile. A while ago, Ubisoft announced Assassin's Creed Codename: JADE, which is a full-fledged RPG for Android and iOS.
It looks like Ubisoft are looking to maximise franchise visibility across all major platforms with offerings on mobile, console, PC, and now, even VR. With the launch of the Meta Quest 3 and the PS VR2, there is a ton of interest in the VR space, which could become the next big gold rush for AAA publishers and studios.
Assassin's Creed Nexus To Get a Full Reveal on June 12 as Part of Ubisoft Forward
Assassin's Creed on VR is an interesting prospect, to say the least. Based on the parkour traversal alone, it seems fair to say that the prospect of jumping across rooftops and scaling skyscrapers with nothing but your bare hands in VR seems like a massively inviting prospect, vertigo and motion sickness withstanding.
Ubisoft has made little secret of the fact that Assassin's Creed continues to be their crown jewel as it was reported that a total of 2,800 developers across different studios are working on the franchise. The 2,800 developer strength is spread across projects on mobile as well as PC/Console, and now VR.
While VR has still not become the gaming juggernaut it is poised to be, it could easily become the go-to platform for gaming. The struggle for VR currently seems to be finding ways to scale the hardware so that the price point is accessible to a larger consumer base.
Ubisoft has been incredibly active when it comes to maximising franchise potential across platforms as it was also announced that the publisher is also working on a Netflix series based on the franchise as well. It will be interesting to see what the future looks like for the franchise and whether the VR project succeeds in impressing the fanbase to the point where it becomes a potential system seller for the PS VR2 or the Meta Quest 3.
