Mortal Kombat 1 will not surprise you; that's what it's got going for itself the most. That is not to say that the game isn't trying out new things - the addition of gameplay features Kameo stands as evidence that Netherrealm will not rest on its laurels. Mortal Kombat 1 carries forward the franchise's legacy with a brutal, punchy new iteration without sacrificing its accessibility to mainstream audiences. While the franchise has often been considered as the more "mass appeal" or "for the casuals" when it comes to the fighting game genre - the last few games in the series have strived towards giving players a challenge by incorporating elements like frame counts for moves and a slower pace that is in line with FGC mainstays like Tekken or Street Fighter.
Mortal Kombat 1 is possibly the most elegant version of the ideas introduced in Mortal Kombat 11 and X. The game is a much slower pace than compared to even MK X and players are going to have to learn these characters and strings to have any chance of success. Simple button mashing will only get players so far as multi-hit combos require a certain amount of skill and repetition to pull off. Mortal Kombat 1's Pre-Order Beta gives players a chance to play with a decent selection of fighters, including:
- Liu Kang
- Kenshi
- Li Mei
- Sub-Zero
- Johnny Cage
- Kitana
Along with these primary characters, players also have "Kameos" to pick from. Kameo essentially involves picking a second character to act as a tag-team partner for the player and can be called upon to provide additional support. The Kameo can be used at any point in the match and the cooldown meter is forgiving enough for them to be a regular occurrence. The pre-order beta includes Kameos from Sonya, Jax, Frost, and Kano.
Does Mortal Kombat 1 Feel Different from its Predecessors?
While it's difficult to nail down what exactly feels distinct in Mortal Kombat 1 from the last title in the series - it is clear that the distinct experience of playing the game is a result of a number of minor changes coming together to deliver a fresh experience. The general, here, seems to be that for everything that the game has gotten rid of - it has added something in its place. For instance, while the game gets rid of environmental interaction and attacks - it adds Kameos to essentially do the same thing and adds an extra dimension to the fights that feel a lot more elegant than environmental attacks.
Visually, this has to be the best-looking fighting game I've played - and that's a saying a lot for someone who's dropped an unreasonable amount of hours playing the fantastic Street Fighter 6. The game is a complete reboot in every sense of the word as the new art style makes a massive difference to the presentation of the game. The updated character designs also add a ton of personality to the game, and personally, it was much nicer playing as a young Kenshi. Despite us having known these characters for the better part of 2 decades, all characters seem distinct and fresh - which makes me really excited about the Story Mode when the game comes out on September 19, 2023.
The new visual style is reflected in the incredible blood spatter on characters, adding a level of realism to things that is in complete contrast with the fact that there is an ice ninja in the game that hits you with a humongous ice hammer whenever he's angry. The sense of realism is carried forward into other major elements of the game such as animations. For instance, Johnny Cage's moveset is a lot more realistic and there is no green trail anymore with his iconic kicks. While that feels a little jarring at first, I came to appreciate the new direction.
Final Impressions
The Pre-Order Beta accomplishes exactly what it set out to do and gives players an in-depth look at what to expect from the game come launch time. While there is bound to be a plethora of changes and tweaks before the game comes out later next month - this feels like the strongest Mortal Kombat has been in years. From the looks of things, it appears Netherrealm has a solid Story Mode to go along with its flashy new animations and things are looking good for Mortal Kombat 1 when it comes out later this month.
