A free-to-play Elden Ring mobile game with microtransactions is reportedly under development, according to various sources online. As FromSoftware fans are waiting for their long-awaited Shadow of the Erdtree for the DLC, the Japanese developers have possibly taken another approach to keep fans busy with a mobile game. While not a lot of solid information is available regarding the mobile title, reports claim that Tencent is working on the game.

It will reportedly be the newest example of Tencent licensing, turning a major AAA title into a mobile game. FromSoftware's Elden Ring garnered a massive fan following after it was first revealed in 2019. After its launch in 2022, the title won the Game of the Year award. After playing Hidetaka Miyazaki's masterful creation, gamers are curious about how the mobile version will turn out.

PC Games Price Hikes

In November 2023, FromSoftware and Miyazaki's team confirmed that the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree expansion development was proceeding smoothly. However, gamers have been waiting to hear an official release date for the DLC. According to a Reuters report, three people familiar with the matter have mentioned the development of an Elden Ring mobile version.

The company is searching for a refresh for its aging stock of titles. Tencent reportedly acquired the licensing rights for Elden Ring by FromSoftware in 2022 and immediately put people behind the development schedule to work on a prototype. However, the progress has been slow since then.

If the reports are true, Elden Ring will become the first of FromSoftware's titles to receive a free-to-play version in recent history. Alongside the free-to-play version of Miyazaki's original masterpiece, Tencent is also working on mobile versions of a Need for Speed and Assassin's Creed title. Elden Ring was a massive deal for FromSoftware fans as the title combined pretty much every aspect of Soulsborne games, paired with a masterfully co-written story by George R.R Martin, known for writing the Song of Ice and Fire books (A.K.A Game of Thrones). With the game receiving a free-to-play mobile version, gamers are curious about Tencent's approach.

While gamers wait for the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, a mobile game will not be too bad to keep one busy for more ER content. However, the original creators of Elden Ring have nothing to do with the mobile version's development by Tencent.  The Chinese company has proven itself worthy by making mobile versions of many major games in the past, including Call of Duty: Mobile and PUBG: Mobile. However, Elden Ring will be a completely different project for the studio.
