EA Play Subscription to Raise its Price

The renowned American video game company Electronic Arts announced the increase in the prices of their EA Play subscriptions. All the EA Play subscriptions, including the standard EA Play and EA Play Pro subscriptions, are part of the price increase and are already live for new subscribers. The latest pricing will go live on 10 May 2024 for the existing subscribers.

The price bump was first reported by GamesIndustry.biz. With the new prices, the standard EA Play subscription prices went from $4.99 / £3.99 per month to $5.99 / £5.99, while the annual subscription prices rose from $29.99 / £19.99 to $39.99 / £35.99. For the EA Play Pro subscriptions, the monthly pricing increased from $14.99 / £14.99 to $16.99 / £16.99, whereas the annual prices rose from $99.99 / £89.99 to $119.99 / £109.99.

After Sony PlayStation And Microsoft Xbox, Electronic Arts Increases The Pricing Of Its Subscription Services

Electronic Arts isn’t the first one to increase the pricing of its subscription services. To meet the market value, companies like Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox have already raised their subscription service pricing. While Xbox bumped up their pricing with a small margin, PlayStation Plus subscriptions saw a massive increase of up to 35% in their pricing.

With the standard EA Play subscription, players get up to 10 hours of trial to new games days before the launch. If the player enjoys the game, they can purchase at a 10% discount and continue the game from where they left off. Subscribers also received several exclusive in-game rewards and access to numerous games on the Play List. A few of the popular games available on EA Play List are:

• The Sims 4
• Battlefield 2042
• It Takes Two
• Star Wars Squadrons
• Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
• Battlefield Five
• A Way Out

The EA Play Pro subscriptions offer even more incentives like access to premium editions of select new-release games days before they launch, as well as access to a library of premium edition Electronic Arts games and fan-favourite series. While the subscription services help gamers play multiple games via a single subscription, with numerous subscription services available in the market, the value they provide is meagre. 

With subscription services, the gaming industry is becoming less about owning the game and more about getting access to it via subscriptions. Such elements are a significant threat to game preservation, which used to be the essence of gaming once.
