Apple recently announced at WWDC '23 that Death Stranding as well as other Kojima Productions games will be making their way over to macOS. This announcement was paired with the reveal of the Game Porting Toolkit, which allows devs to evaluate PC games' porting potential to macOS. The toolkit is available to the public right now and through its DirectX12 emulation capabilities, users are already running some of the most popular games on PC on Mac right now.
Users have been able to run massively taxing games like Diablo IV and Cyberpunk 2077 on M1 and M2 Max MacBooks. The results look pretty great and it stands to reason that Apple will try and make a push towards making macOS a credible platform for gaming.
Apple's Game Porting Toolkit is powered by developer CrossOver's source code as their emulation solution. CrossOver's Wine emulation solution has been a successful solution for running Windows games on macOS. Apple's recognition of the software and its use in the Game Porting Toolkit is a major step forward and the developer, CrossOver, is ecstatic at the prospect.
macOS: Can Apple Capitalize on Powerful Hardware for Gaming?
"We are ecstatic that Apple chose to use CrossOver’s source code as their emulation solution for the Game Porting Toolkit," wrote CrossOver in a recent blog post. "We have decades of experience creating ports with Wine, and we are very pleased that Apple is recognizing that Wine is a fantastic solution for running Windows games on macOS. We did not work with Apple on this tool, but we would be delighted to work with any game developers who try out the Game Porting Toolkit and see the massive potential that Wine offers."
Although users have posted promising footage of the games running on Ultra and 60 FPS on the M1 and M2 Max Macbooks, these are still not the most affordable pieces of hardware for the general public. It doesn't seem likely that Apple will choose to put out a more accessible product in the hopes of capturing the gaming market, but it does bolster the M1 and M2 Max's offering when it comes to gaming.
With Death Stranding making its way over to macOS, there is a chance that Apple is willing to work with major studios and publishers to help bring over some of their biggest titles to the platform. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and whether gaming becomes a focus for Apple in the years moving forward.
