Naughty Dog's Next Game May Leave the Traditional Formula Behind
The Last of Us studio, Naughty Dog has multiple single-player games under its development wheel at the moment. However, the next game is reportedly set to deliver more freedom to players according to recent statements surfacing online. Naughty Dog head, Neil Druckmann said in a statement that the studio will likely focus on less traditional narrative like the previous games. He also told The Washington Post in an interview that he is more intrigued by titles like Elden Ring and Inside.
He said that the titles don't rely on "traditional narrative" to tell a story. He believes that while The Last of Us offers some of the best storytelling in the market, the game mostly relies on cinematics, but a lot of it is in the gameplay, and moving in spaces.
The understanding of a space's history by looking at it and examining it, much like done in Soulsborne titles, is what Druckmann will likely aim for in the future title. However, there have been no official statements on the freedom part from the studio. Uncharted on the other hand, delivers more exploration and combat freedom compared to The Last of Us games; however, it still relies on a more narrative-driven gameplay to fill out story bits. By 'more freedom', it could also mean the next Naughty Dog title may deliver a more challenging, and gameplay-heavy experience, with the addition of new and unique mechanics.
