According to recent reports, Sony has officially paused production of its PSVR2 headsets for the time being. This production halt is mainly due to unsold stocks of units, which have piled up over time, hampering sales. The reports also suggest that the company is having doubts regarding the appeal of VR gadgets to the general public.

Sony Pausing PSVR2 Production as Stock Piles Up Due To Low Sales

The unnamed source who delivered this report to Bloomberg suggested that Sony has produced over two million PSVR2 units since its release on February 22, 2023. After production began last year, the shipments for PSVR2 have steadily declined every quarter. This report was gathered from IDC Logistics, which regularly tracks deliveries to retailers.

Sony has recently seen a surplus of the assembled PSVR2 products throughout their supply chain. That being said, VP for Data and Analytics at IDC Europe, Francisco Jeronimo mentioned that there could be a recovery of this particular 'product category' in the coming years. He mentioned:

“We forecast the VR market to grow on average 31.5 percent per year between 2023 and 2028”

Sony has been one the largest companies offering VR to fans after Meta and Apple. However, all the mentioned companies have struggled to attract content creators and fans to move their platforms upward. While Apple's expensive Vision Pro headset has had its share of backlash on launch, the product has found a niche set consumers.

The unique features of interaction sets it apart from many VR headsets available on the market, including the PSVR2. While Sony has promised more titles coming to the PSVR2 recently, gamers are still skeptical about owning one due to its price and what it offers.

At the moment, Sony's primary goal stands to clear out the excessive inventory for the PSVR2. Moreover, PlayStation studios have started adding more games to the platform, as one of the main reasons gamers were reportedly backing off from purchasing the VR headset was due to its lack of content. With the headset costing more than the PlayStation 5 itself, gamers are waiting for a better library.
